Burian Group Gruppe Burian

The monarchist student fraternity "Akademisches Corps Ottonen" went into illegality after dissolving itself. Its senior, Captain Karl Burian, who had not taken the oath to Hitler at the military swearing-in ceremony in 1938, recruited a resistance group from the members of this fraternity, which provided political and financial support Otto von Habsburg-Lothringen, a member of the middle school fraternity Tegetthoff Wien, the student fraternities Nibelungia, Ostaricia, Suevia Graz, and made contact with other legitimist groups (Hebra, Austrian People's Front).

When Captain Karl Burian contacted the Polish intelligence service to pass on important military information, he was betrayed by a contact and arrested by the Gestapo on October 13, 1938. The other activists also fell into the hands of the Gestapo. The VGH sentenced Burian to death for "preparation for high treason" on December 9, 1943; six co-defendants received prison sentences of between 2 and 8 years. Karl Burian was executed on March 13, 1944. Josef Krinninger died in Mauthausen concentration camp.
