Richard Karl Becher was born in Vienna, the legitimate son of railroad official Leopold Becher and his wife Franziska Magdalena, née Meister. After elementary school, he attended a grammar school in Vienna, but dropped out and enlisted in the First World War in 1916. Between 1917 and 1918, he fought on the Austro-Italian front.
