Mair-Grünewald Group Mair-Grünewald-Gruppe

The Mair-Grünewald group was very important, was founded in 1940 and was initiated by secondary school professor Franz Mair. Also active there was Eduard Grünewald, a member of the K.Ö.H.V. Alpinia Innsbruck, who established contact with Alpinia and recruited further members there. There were also contacts with Fritz Molden, who played an important role with his connections to OSS and 05, as well as with the later Foreign Minister Karl Gruber, member of the K.Ö.St.V. Vindobona II and K.Ö.St.V. Austria Vienna.

The events in Tyrol in April and May 1945 were remarkable. At the beginning of April 1945, Karl Gruber finally arrived in Innsbruck and took over the leadership of the resistance groups. On 18 April, a "Provisional Austrian National Committee" (POEN) was founded as an executive political body, to which Eduard Reut-Nicolussi, member of the A.V. Austria Innsbruck, K.a.V. Rheno-Danubia, K.Ö.St.V. Traungau and K.Ö.H.V. Alpinia Innsbruck. On April 21, the Gestapo began a wave of arrests, which also affected some CVers. The three Alpinists Eduard Grünewald, Alfred Hirsch and Otto Knittel were arrested. They were to be executed on May 1, but managed to escape.

The situation came to a head as the Allies approached. On May 2, they succeeded in freeing the prisoners in the Reichenau concentration camp and occupying important buildings. On May 3, the Landhaus was occupied by a military resistance movement at 2 pm. In the process, Rolf Winkler, a member of A.V. Austria Innsbruck and K.Ö.H.V. Alpinia Innsbruck, was seriously injured. In the evening, the first flyers were distributed and red-white-red flags were hoisted everywhere. When the US army moved in, Ludwig Steiner, a member of A.V. Austria Innsbruck, was able to report the liberated city to them, which was primarily thanks to the resistance movement, and in turn the Catholic Couleur students. Among them were the "illegal" suburban president of the ÖCV, Gerald Grinschgl, member of the K.Ö.H.V. Carolina Graz and Carl Hirnschrott, member of K.Ö.St.V. Ambronia Innsbruck, et mult. and Franz Stigger, also member of K.Ö.St.V. Ambronia Innsbruck.
