Curriculum Vitae
Wilhelm Franz Zimmerbauer was born in Linz as the legitimate son of Johann Zimmerbauer, a city railway official, and Klara, née Kefer. After elementary school, he attended the Bundesrealgymnasium in Linz-Fadingerstraße, where he graduated in 1933. On 7 January 1936, he began working as a civil servant for the Linz city council.
On March 11, 1938, I marched [in Linz] with around 3,000 young people from the main square towards the Mozart crossroads as a youth leader, and there were serious clashes with the National Socialists, where I clashed with [Sepp] Wolkerstorfer, who was later appointed Lord Mayor.
And at first I had to suffer and endure a lot here, both morally and emotionally, because when we had to walk around the courtyard, our dear colleagues, who used to pretend to be good colleagues, spat down on us from above.
After being transferred to a new prison in the former Europa Hotel in Linz, Wilhelm Zimmerbauer was deported to the Dachau concentration camp
It was remarkable that in Munich, when we had to wait for the train, we went to the second-class station restaurant and ordered a good meal there, and when we wanted to pay, we were told: "It's already been paid for." In any case, there were people there who recognized that we were from the concentration camp and paid for the food for us.
Back in Linz, Wilhelm Zimmerbauer works as an accountant, marries and becomes the father of a daughter. In June 1939, he was drafted into the Wehrmacht. As a soldier, he witnessed the liberation of Austria in May 1945.
Wilhelm Zimmerbauer was professionally rehabilitated after the war and returned to work as a civil servant at the Linz City Council, where he rose to become head of the real estate office. He volunteers with the Pfadfinderinnen und Pfadfindern Österreichs (PPÖ), with the ÖVP-Kameradschaft der politisch Verfolgten und Bekenner für Österreich, at the Vereinigte Linzer Wohnungsgenossenschaften (VLW) and at the Wohnungsgenossenschaft Wohnungsfürsorge [today: Wohnungsgenossenschaft Lebensräume]. Between 1955 and 1996 he was chairman of the Wohnungsgenossenschaft Wohnungsfürsorge and between 1956 and 1993 chairman of the Vereinigte Linzer Wohnungsgenossenschaften. In 1966 he married for a second time and became the father of two sons. Wilhelm Zimmerbauer retired as a civil servant in 1977. Between 1996 and 1999, he was the regional chairman in Upper Austria of the ÖVP Comradeship of the Politically Persecuted and Confessors for Austria.
Wilhelm Zimmerbauer died at the age of 84 and was laid to rest at the cemetery in Linz-St. Barbara.
