Scouts and Guides Austria Pfadfinderinnen und Pfadfinder Österreich

A scout is a member of an international, religiously and politically independent educational movement for children and young people that is open to people of all nationalities and faiths. The aim of the Scout movement is to promote the development of young people so that they can take on responsibility in society.

The first scout camp was organized in 1907 by Robert Baden-Powell, a British general, on Brownsea Island in England. Baden-Powell used the experiences of this camp to develop an independent methodology in his book Scouting for Boys, published in 1908, which is known as the Scouting Method. In the first half of the 20th century, the Scouting movement spread all over the world. After just a few years, it was divided into three age groups in order to create age-appropriate learning and adventure spaces. In Austria, the largest scout organization is the Pfadfinder und Pfadfinderinnen Österreichs (PPÖ) at www.ppoe.at.
