Curriculum Vitae
Anton Nöbauer studied medicine in Vienna after graduating from high school. Alongside Ernst Aigner and Lambert Weissl, he was one of the three new members who were admitted to the Kürnberg student fraternity on April 6, 1940 at an "illegal" pub.
In 1942, he was drafted into the "Medical Replacement and Training Unit 17" in the Radetzky barracks in Vienna. Here he joined the resistance group led by Colonel Dr. Franz Ritschl. The doctors and paramedics on duty here attempted to save resistance fighters from being sent to the front by committing them to military hospitals with fictitious or at least exaggerated findings. Towards the end of 1944, Anton Nöbauer himself was admitted to a military hospital for two months due to a "secondary condition following the loss of a Hamleiterstein, gastritis, cholecystopathy and swelling of the liver" - according to the Wehrmacht files - which saved him from further deployment on the front. His resistance activities remained undiscovered.
After the war, he obtained his doctorate in medicine in 1950 and worked as a general practitioner in Neukirchen from 1953. Shortly before his death, he wrote to his fellow members looking back:
"I always liked being a Kürnberger, as I had belonged to it since 6 April 1940, a time when all fraternities were strictly forbidden and I or we would have been threatened with concentration camp if we were found guilty. I was also a member of the CV resistance group, led by Colonel Dr. Ritschl, Nc, and senior physician Dr. Brunner-Ehrl, Ne, Radetzky Barracks Vienna.
I was accepted into the Kürnberg by my bodyguard, Dr. Franz Maser from Ried and the canon Laurin Waisel [note: correctly Lambert Weissl v/o Laurin] from Reichersberg, both Kürnbergers, in the presence of cand. med. Böhm Karl, Babenberg Vienna, and Dr. Fischer, Austria Vienna. Any form of dictatorship was an abomination to us all."
