Dr. Karl Ernst Büchele

Karl Ernst Büchele was born in Doren as the legitimate son of master bricklayer Daniel Büchele and Katharina, née Arlt. After attending elementary school, he transferred to the grammar school in Feldkirch, where he was accepted into the secondary school fraternity Clunia Feldkirch in 1922. After his A-levels, he moved to Graz and studied medicine. He joins the student fraternity Carolina Graz in 1926. In 1936, he married Waltraud Hoffmann and had a son and a daughter with her.

After the occupation of Austria by the Third Reich, he was arrested on May 15, 1938 and transferred to the Allentsteig district court; 10 days later, he was transferred to the Elisabethpromenade police prison in Vienna. There he remained in custody for 3 months.

After his release, he was banned from practicing medicine and working until 1 January 1939. As the municipal doctor of Schwarzenau, he was released through forced retirement and allowed to settle in South Bohemia. He was then drafted into the Wehrmacht as a junior doctor and was taken prisoner of war in Russia, from where he managed to escape back home in 1945.

After the war, he practiced as a community doctor in Ziersdorf in Lower Austria. He becomes involved with the Austrian Comradeship Association and the Austrian Red Cross. He retires as a doctor. He dies at the age of 84 and finds his final resting place at the cemetery in Ziersdorf.
