Curriculum Vitae
Karl Hieß [also spelled Hiess] was born in Vienna as the legitimate son of the junk dealer Karl Hieß and his wife Barbara, née Sachslehner. Very little has been preserved about Karl Hieß. He married Anna Kastel in 1922 and worked as a commercial clerk. From 1935, he was involved in the Frontmiliz.
On March 12, 1938, Karl Hieß witnessed the demise of a free and independent Austria with the invasion of the German Wehrmacht. Due to his activities in the front militia, he was arrested by the Gestapo on January 12, 1939 and deported to Dachau concentration camp on March 4, 1939. After Dachau concentration camp was cleared for the SS on September 1, 1939 due to Hitler's invasion of Poland, Karl Hieß was transferred to Mauthausen concentration camp on September 27, 1939. He was murdered there on January 12, 1940, two years after his arrest. His mortal remains were transferred to Vienna and buried at the cemetery in Vienna-Simmering.
His wife Anna Hieß witnessed the liberation of Austria and the re-establishment of the Republic in April and May 1945. She joined the newly founded Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) and the ÖVP-Kameradschaft der politisch Verfolgten und Bekenner für Österreich.
