Richard Adolf Franz Maria Oxenbauer was born in Vienna as the legitimate son of the k.u.k. Lieutenant Colonel Franz Oxenbauer and his wife Maria, née Reisinger. After elementary school, he attended the lower school at the grammar school in Seitenstetten and then the pioneer cadet school in Hainburg an der Donau, both in Lower Austria. He graduated in 1907 and joined the sapper battalion [technical unit - today: pioneers] in Klosterneuburg on August 18, 1907.

In 1912, Richard Oxenbauer married Berta Kiticsan and changed his name to 'Gredler-Oxenbauer' in 1913. After the outbreak of the First World War
