After graduating from the Jesuit College Kollegium Kalksburg, Leopold Arzt studied medicine at the University of Vienna from 1902 and was admitted to Norica in 1902. After completing his doctorate (1908), he studied at the Institut Pasteur in Paris and worked at the Department of Pathological Histology and Bacteriology in Vienna. From 1911 he then worked at the Clinic for Dermatology and Syphilidology in Vienna. During the First World War, he worked as a military doctor. After completing his habilitation in 1915, he was appointed Suppl. Head of the Dermatology Clinic in Innsbruck from 1919-1920 and in April 1926 was appointed Professor and Head of the Innsbruck Dermatology Clinic and in July 1926 Head of the Dermatology Clinic in Vienna. From 1927-1930 and 1933-1934 he was elected Dean and from 1936-1937 he held the office of Rector. He was a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and later a member of the Federal Cultural Council and the Bundestag.
After the Anschluss, he was imprisoned for several weeks in the police prison in Vienna 9 due to his close contacts with resistance groups. On September 12, 1938, he was dismissed from his professional position and on March 28, 1940, he was retired with retroactive effect with a reduced pension. He was also banned from all scientific and public activities until the end of the war.
