Hubert Theodor Leopold Hagmann was born in Spitz an der Donau in Lower Austria as the legitimate son of the teacher Benedict Hagmann and his wife Leopoldine, née Stiassny. After elementary school, he attended the lower secondary school in Krems and then transferred to the infantry cadet school in Vienna-Breitensee, where he graduated in 1908.
On August 18, 1908, he joined the Imperial and Royal Army. Army in the k.u.k. Infantry Regiment No. 15 'Freiherr von Georgi'. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1911 and promoted to first lieutenant with the outbreak of the First World War. He was stationed in Lviv and took part in the Austrian campaign in Russia, where he was taken prisoner of war in 1915. He was released in 1917 and promoted to captain.
As an Austro-Hungarian officer, Hubert Hagmann experienced the defeat of his homeland, the break-up of the dual monarchy and the expulsion of the House of Habsburg. On January 1, 1920, he was accepted into the new Austrian army. A year later, in 1921, he married Theresia Hoch, but the marriage remained childless. In the same year, he was promoted to major and assigned to Infantry Regiment No. 4.
After the National Socialist coup attempt on July 25, 1934, in which Federal Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss was assassinated, a military court trial was held in which the coup plotters were put on trial. On August 17, 1934, Federal Chancellor Kurt von Schuschnigg appoints Hubert Hagmann as a member of the military court. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1936.
On March 12, 1938, the patriotic Austrian witnessed the demise of a free and independent Austria with the invasion of the German Wehrmacht. Just two days after the occupation of his home country, Hubert Hagmann was suspended from duty on March 14, 1938, due to his activities against the National Socialist putschists of 1934, and dismissed on April 29, 1938 through forced retirement. On June 7, 1938, he was forced to vacate his apartment by the new rulers.
Theresia and Hubert Hagmann eked out a living on a minimal pension throughout the Second World War.
In April and May 1945, Hubert Hagmann witnessed the liberation of Austria and the re-establishment of the Republic. He was immediately rehabilitated and placed in the service of the tax authorities, in tax offices 9, 18 and 19. He joins the newly founded Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) and the ÖVP-Kameradschaft der politisch Verfolgten und Bekenner für Österreich. In 1948, he was transferred to the Tax Office for Fees and Transfer Taxes. He retired from there on January 1, 1954.
Hubert Hagmann died in Vienna at the age of 77 and was laid to rest at the cemetery in Vienna-Döbling.
