Curriculum Vitae
Hermann Özelt was born in Steinklamm near Rabenstein an der Pielach as the legitimate son of factory worker Alois Özelt and Franziska, née Mitek. After attending school, he became a worker in the farm and restaurant business of Hans Hackner from Steinklamm.
Hermann Özelt is described as a rather apolitical person, but one who is critical of National Socialism.
As a worker in the Hackner farm and restaurant business, he also witnessed the downfall of an independent and free Austria in March 1938.
He wanted nothing to do with the Nazis and made disparaging remarks against them at every opportunity. It is therefore only conceivable that some informer brought charges against him and that Özelt was taken into custody.
In no case was Özelt arrested for any criminal offense, because he was always a good and honest person.
Hermann Özelt is taken via St. Pölten to Vienna to the prison in Elisabethpromenade and from there deported to Buchenwald concentration camp on September 22, 1939. In Buchenwald concentration camp, he was placed in Block 42.
From his imprisonment, he wrote to his girlfriend Friederike Egger several times.
Hermann Özelt was released from prison on April 22, 1940 and traveled home via Vienna, where he had to report to the Gestapo once again.
In October 1941, he married his girlfriend and subsequently worked in a dairy, where he remained active after the liberation of Austria and eventually retired. He joins the ÖVP-Kameradschaft der politisch Verfolgten und Bekenner für Österreich.
Hermann Özelt dies childless at the age of 94 in Steinklamm near Rabenstein an der Pielach and is laid to rest in the local cemetery in Rabenstein.
