Curriculum Vitae
Maria Theresia Pigal was born in Amstetten as the legitimate daughter of painter's assistant Adalbert and Theresia, née Puva. After finishing school, she began working at the Sparkassa bank in Amstetten in 1926 at the age of 17.
After her two siblings were unemployed in the 1930s, she had to support herself and her siblings with her salary. A staunch Austrian, Maria Pigal is openly critical of National Socialism.
After the occupation of Austria by Hitler's Germany in March 1938, the head of the Sparkassa and mayor of Amstetten Hans Höller, who is also a member of the secondary school fraternity Ostarrichia Amstetten
I can clearly remember that Hörmann repeatedly boasted in the aforementioned institute that he had helped Nazis from Austria who had committed criminal offenses to escape to Germany and join the Austrian Legion. For example, Hörmann once said that he had helped a certain Franz Lechner from Amstetten, who was being persecuted by the Austrian authorities for an explosives attack, to escape to Germany by providing Lechner with the funds he needed to flee.
Maria Pigal herself is given leave of absence as a bank employee on May 3, 1938 and is dismissed on June 30. This was an enormous financial burden, especially as she and her two siblings now had to eke out an existence without an income. Although she looks for a new job, she is unable to find one in Amstetten.
So, as she says herself, she is 'forced to marry' in order to survive. On October 30, 1938, she married the mechanic Hubert Bairhuber, with whom she had a daughter.
In Amstetten, she also experienced the liberation of Austria from German occupation. After the war, she becomes involved in the ÖVP-Kameradschaft der politisch Verfolgten und Bekenner für Österreich. Her husband Hubert died in 1953.
