After elementary school, he went to grammar school in Vienna's 18th district, where he graduated in 1916. After graduating from high school, he was apparently drafted into the I. He was only enrolled at the University of Vienna in the winter semester of 1918/19 to study classical philology. He graduated in 1921 and then worked as a grammar school teacher. In 1928, he was one of the supporters of the secondary school fraternity Vindobona II in Vienna and became a member. In 1935, he first became a high school principal in Graz and then in Leoben.
He was arrested on the evening of March 11, 1938 and transferred to the Buchenwald concentration camp on November 25, 1938. From there, he was transferred to the police prison in Leoben on July 3, 1939. On November 30, 1939, he was transferred to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, from which he was released on January 30, 1943.
After Austria's liberation, Johann Vogelsang was initially appointed Deputy Head of Section IV Teaching and Education and later appointed Head of Section in the Ministry of Education.
