Group Leopold Mahr Gruppe Leopold Mahr

In the fall of 1939, the unemployed Leopold Mahr decided to found a legitimist resistance group. The aim of the group was to achieve the separation of occupied Austria from the German Reich and the re-establishment of a monarchy under Otto von Habsburg-Lotringen.

He approached acquaintances from the circle of the former 'Kaisertreuen Volkspartei' around Colonel Gustav Wolff, also known as the 'Wolff-Verband', in which he himself was active before the occupation of Austria.

Membership cards used were death portraits of the Blessed Emperor Karl (later also Ottonia bricks).

The Leopold Mahr group set membership fees, distributed pamphlets with the headline 'Handschriftten Kaiser Ottos' and collected clothing donations for Legitimists in need and their children.

The Leopold Mahr group grew to more than 80 members. The Gestapo became aware of the group's activities and began arresting its members in April 1940.
