Carmelite Convent Graz - Maria Schnee OCD

The Maria Schnee Monastery is a convent of the Discalced Carmelites in Grabenstraße in the third district of Geidorf. The monastery is located at the foot of the Reinerkogel, slightly off Grabenstraße. The Maria Schnee monastery and pilgrimage church is located in the inner courtyard of the monastery.

A forest chapel Maria Schnee was first mentioned in documents as a place of pilgrimage in 1553. The former bourgeois late Baroque property is dated 1687.

The old Carmelite monastery on Karmeliterplatz was abolished in 1789 as part of the Josephine Reforms (now the Styrian Provincial Archives). In the 1840s, the Carmelites resettled in Graz by acquiring the property (owned by the order since 1842); an attempt by the Discalced Carmelite nuns to acquire the convent had previously failed (they built the Convent of St. Joseph not far away at the foot of the Rosenberg).

When the Carmelites rebuilt their convent in Graz, the building was extended and converted into a monastery by Georg Hauberrisser the Elder, the architect of the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, from 1844 during the late Biedermeier period.
