From a small pension, Gabriele and Johann Granichstaedten-Cerva eke out a living in Vienna. In April and May 1945, they experience the liberation of Austria and the re-establishment of the Republic. He joins the newly founded Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) and the ÖVP-Kameradschaft der politisch Verfolgten und Bekenner für Österreich.

Johann Granichstaedten-Cerva is rehabilitated on 1 November 1945. He worked in the Federal Ministry of the Interior until 1946, was then transferred to the Federal Ministry for Property Security and Economic Planning and in 1948 to the Federal Ministry of Finance, where he worked in property security.
