Curriculum Vitae

Karl Huber was born in Vienna as the legitimate son of unskilled laborer Heinrich Huber and his wife Maria, née Luckner. After compulsory schooling, he completed an apprenticeship as a shoemaker and then went on a journeyman's journey [note: journeyman's journey of young craftsmen]. Between 1923 and 1925, he served in an infantry regiment. He is unemployed between 1925 and 1927 before joining the Vienna Home Guard. In 1928, his illegitimate daughter Edith Sochovsky was born; however, he did not remain permanently involved with the child's mother.

In 1933, he joined the Heimtschutzkorps, an auxiliary police force subordinate to the police, where he became a platoon commander. During the socialist uprisings in February, he was so badly injured by three shots in the pelvic area that he had to walk on crutches for two years. He marries Maria Heger in 1937, but the marriage remains childless.
