Curriculum Vitae
After graduating from the academic grammar school in Graz in 1932, Gustav Mittelbach began studying medicine at the university in his hometown of Graz, which he completed in 1937 with a doctorate in medicine. He joined the Babenberg Graz student fraternity there in 1932.
As he made no secret of his political rejection of National Socialism, he was imprisoned for around two weeks after the Anschluss, reprimanded by the Gau and transferred to Vienna. During the storming of the archiepiscopal palace in Vienna on October 8, 1938, one day after the Feast of the Rosary, the cathedral curate Jobarmes Krawarik, who lived in the house of the cathedral parish at Stephansplatz 3, was thrown from the second floor into the courtyard and seriously injured. He did not receive any medical help from the Viennese ambulance doctors present, but Gustav Mittelbach, who had joined them, was finally able to provide help and, after the rioters had left, took the injured man to the 2nd Surgical Clinic of the Vienna Hospital.
Both the doctor and the injured man realized that they were Cartell brothers during the ambulance transport. During the Second World War, Gustav Mittelbach became a staff doctor in the Wehrmacht, fought in Russia (Stalingrad) and was taken prisoner of war there.
After his release (1947?), he first became a medical officer in Deutschlandsberg and then a specialist in internal medicine. Later, he was also given a lectureship at the University of Graz. After retiring in 1980, he began studying again (history and folklore), which he completed in 1987 with a Dr. phil.
