Anton Hittmair began studying medicine in Innsbruck after graduating from high school in 1911. At the beginning of the First World War, he was drafted into the k. u. k. Army. He was taken prisoner of war in Russia, from which he was released before the end of the war. He obtained his doctorate in 1918, became an assistant doctor at Innsbruck University Hospital, in 1925 primary physician in the internal medicine department of Weiser Hospital and in 1931 its director.

After the Anschluss, Anton Hittmair was imprisoned as head of the Seefeld branch of Innsbruck University Hospital in 1938 and transferred to Dachau concentration camp on 17 June 1938. In the concentration camp, he, who had not previously belonged to a corporation, got to know many CVers, including Leopold Figl, Felix Hurdes, Fritz Bock etc., He is also confused with a namesake who is a member of Austria. On September 27, 1939, he was transferred to Flossenbürg concentration camp, where he was released on March 5, 1940 and subsequently assigned to the University Hospital in Innsbruck as a research assistant.
