Curriculum Vitae
Karl Otto Kunizer was born in Waidhofen an der Ybbs in Lower Austria, the son of Jewish landowner Franz Emmanuel Kunizer and his Catholic wife Clara, née Frieda, and grew up on the 170-hectare estate, where he attended elementary school. After attending grammar school and graduating from high school, he enrolled at the technical college in Vienna, from which he graduated with distinction.
After Karl Kunizer graduated from the technical college in Vienna, he returned to Waidhofen an der Ybbs and worked on his father's estate, which he took over in 1938.
In contrast, I'm doing quite well with the machine gun and rifle. No wonder. But I don't need to think that I'm developing any ambition. I only do just enough to avoid attracting any unpleasant attention. First I was snapped at by the guard for not saying hello, and then by the U.v.D. for shirking. My only worry was whether I'd caught a cold. Today the battalion commander was there and said that enemy propaganda is outright lies and the enemy's strategy is nothing, while everything our leadership does is above criticism from the common man.
The content of the letters did not remain hidden from the military authorities and immediately after his release, Karl Kunizer was arrested by the Gestapo on 26 June 1943 and taken to the Rossauerlände police prison. On August 31, 1944, he was transferred to the provincial court, where he was tried before the special court on November 30, 1944 for offenses against the Heimtückegesetz. He is sentenced to two years in prison for the letters and experiences the liberation of Austria in the Vienna Provincial Court. He regained his freedom on April 7, 1945 and then returned to Waidhofen an der Ybbs. He subsequently became involved in the ÖVP-Kameradschaft der politisch Verfolgten und Bekenner für Österreich.
He continued to run his own farm and died there at the age of 91, single and childless.
