Curriculum Vitae

Adolf Schemel attended the Imperial and Royal State Grammar School in Salzburg and, after graduating in 1899, began studying at the Faculty of Law at the University of Vienna, graduating in 1904 with a doctorate. In 1903, he joined the Salzburg state civil service, working at the Salzburg Land and Zell am See district authorities from 1911 to 1922, then in the trade department and school department of the state government.

After the First World War, he was also active in local politics from 1919 to 1931 as a local councillor for the city of Salzburg and club chairman of the Christian Social Party, in 1934 under Governor Franz Rehrl as Deputy Governor and until March 12, 1938 as Provincial Councillor.

After the Anschluss, he was temporarily imprisoned. Forced retirement on April 1, 1938 and renewed police detention in July 1938. At the end of November 1939, he was dismissed without pension entitlement.

After the war, Adolf Schemel was initially elected as provisional provincial party chairman on 7 May 1945 when the Christian Social Party (CSP) was re-established in Salzburg and was appointed provincial governor (until 12 December 1945) by the American military governor on 10 May 1945 at the suggestion of the CSP/ÖVP, SPÖ and KPÖ; he then took over the office of deputy governor again until 1949.
