Univ.-Prof. Dr. Ludwig Hörbst

Ludwig Hörbst decided to study medicine in Hall after graduating from high school in 1923 and went to Innsbruck. Here he became a member of the Raeto-Bavaria student fraternity in 1923. In the academic year 1927/28, he was also a member of the Student Chamber. In the winter semester of 1929/30, he completed his studies with a doctorate and then initially worked at the university's Department of Pathological Anatomy. From 1934, he was an assistant at the Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic

After the Anschluss, Rector Steinacker informed him on April 26, 1938:

"In accordance with the decree of the Austrian Ministry of Education of April 23, 1938, no. 12.275-I/lc, you will be on leave with immediate effect until further notice. Accordingly, you must refrain from teaching or any other activity that falls within the scope of your previous duties or assignment."

The dean of the faculty justified the temporary suspension of the habilitation procedure after the war on 28 August 1945 as follows:

"The procedure was started at that time and progressed to the trial lecture. As a result of the upheaval in March 1938, it was not completed for political reasons."

A memo from the University of Innsbruck dated 14.9.1945 gives the reasons:

"In March 1938, two days in protective custody. Suspension from clinical service. Suspension of the habilitation procedure. Banned from practicing as a specialist in Tyrol." Ludwig Hörbst is drafted into the Wehrmacht as a military doctor after his leave of absence. On September 15, 1944, he is discharged for political reasons. He then went to Schweidnitz in Lower Silesia as an auxiliary medical officer.

After the war, Ludwig Hörbst was appointed as the new head of the Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic on October 30, 1945. He was elected Dean of the Faculty of Medicine from 1953-1955 and Rector of the University of Innsbruck in 1964/65
