After the Anschluss, he was granted leave of absence on March 15, 1938 and dismissed without severance pay on June 1, 1938. According to his own statements, he was taken into protective custody in the police prison in Vienna 9 from March 17, 1938 to May 8, 1938. His house was searched. After his release, he took over his father's farm in Gleisdorf (Styria). From August 25, 1944 to August 31, 1944, he was again detained by the Gestapo in Graz.
