Curriculum Vitae

Anna Ruhso was born in Vienna as the legitimate daughter of Johann Ruhso and Anna, née Peschke. After primary and secondary school, she first helps in her sister's household and then learns the craft of machine embroidery. During the First World War, she worked as a tram conductor in Vienna. In 1919, she married the streetcar conductor Anton Bieder. This marriage produced a son in 1925, after which she stayed at home. In 1936, Anna Bieder fell seriously ill with meningitis.

The family was politically uninterested. Immediately after the occupation of Austria by the Third Reich in March 1938, Anton Bieder died of cancer in August 1938. While her husband was still on his deathbed, she was asked to join the NSDAP with the hope of finding work. Now penniless with a son in high school, the widow takes this step. Soon afterwards, she was offered the opportunity to take over an Aryanized Jewish business and was promised a trade license. However, she refuses out of conviction and prefers to keep her head above water by doing handicrafts at home.

The perceived harassment of Jewish fellow citizens in my neighborhood may have contributed to my awakened negative attitude.

Anna Bieder in her memories

The miner Ernst is sitting in the ministry in Vienna doing a correspondence course. Doesn't that seem strange to you? He hasn't had any training yet and he's never been overly bright. Someone else will have a hand in it, don't you think? Schlögl hasn't moved in yet either, strange, isn't it? So there's no need to be ashamed and think you're a shirker. I think Alfons, the war is going wrong. The situation in Italy is very critical. I met a well-known gentleman who is traveling with the transports because of an ailment, but he is certainly not a man who talks a lot or is untruthful. He told me that there is enormous hatred of Germans in all countries, whether Bulgaria or Romania, no matter where, because the Germans behave like pigs. This hatred doesn't apply to Austrians.

So, please don't get into the habit of being a pig! Hitler knows very well that after the failure of the war, a Germany will no longer exist, an Austria certainly will. And that's why he shouted: "There are only annihilated and survivors". Well, that's a feat! He is not there with his loyal followers. Most of the wives of leading personalities and with the corresponding currency in their pockets are in Switzerland, including Emmy and the Edda. That's why, Alfons, it no longer stands to pull the chestnuts out of the fire.

From Anna Bieder's first letter to her son dated October 13, 1943

From Anna Binder's second letter to her son dated October 16, 1943

On January 13, 1944, Anna Bieder was arrested by the Gestapo and sentenced to 18 months in prison by the special court on March 29, 1944 for homicide and defeating the military. She is transferred to the Stein prison near Krems, where she is liberated on April 5, 1945.

Scarred physically, she takes early retirement at the end of the war. She joins the ÖVP-Kameradschaft der politisch Verfolgten und Bekenner für Österreich and dies in Vienna at the age of 82.
