Curriculum Vitae

Friedrich Joseph Freiherr Reichlin von Meldegg was born in Vienna as the legitimate son of Field Marshal Lieutenant Karl Friedrich Freiherr Reichlin von Meldegg and Maria Rosa Susanna Angela Augusta, née Reitz. After elementary school, he transferred to the military lower secondary school in Eisenstadt in 1884 and later to the military upper secondary school in Moravian Weissenkirchen [today: Hranice na Moravě in the Czech Republic], where he graduated in 1891. Between 1891 and 1894, he graduated from the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neudstadt and joined the Infantry Regiment No. 1 'Kaiser' as a lieutenant on August 1, 1894.

After serving in several other regiments, Friedrich Freiherr Reichlin von Meldegg was promoted to first lieutenant in Hussar Regiment No. 5 'Count Radetzky' on August 1, 1902. On June 21, 1906, he married Gabriella Gosztonyi de Gosztony et Krencs, who came from a Hungarian noble family. He subsequently had three children with her.

On May 1, 1911, he was promoted to cavalry captain in Hussar Regiment No. 13 'Wilhelm Crown Prince of the German Empire and Crown Prince of Prussia'. He was ordered to the Russian front with this regiment at the outbreak of the First World War. In April 1916, he was appointed Major and assigned to Infantry Regiment No. 14 'Hessen' on the Isonzo Front. On August 1, 1917, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and in October 1918 was appointed commander of Hussar Regiment No. 13 'Wilhelm Kronprinz des Deutschen Reiches und Kronprinz von Preußen'.

As commander of Hussar Regiment No. 13 'Wilhelm Crown Prince of the German Empire and Crown Prince of Prussia', Friedrich Freiherr Reichlin von Meldegg experiences the downfall of the Austro-Hungarian dual monarchy and the expulsion of the imperial family from Austria.

After the war, he becomes a representative of the International Red Cross for researching prisoners of war in the East.

On January 1, 1921, Friedrich Freiherr Reichlin von Meldegg was retired and at the same time appointed titular colonel.

As a retired officer, he became involved in the legitimist 'Reichsbund der Österreicher' during the interwar period. This organization was strictly opposed to National Socialism and, especially in the 1930s, advocated an independent and autonomous Austria.

At the age of 64, Friedrich Freiherr Reichlin von Meldegg witnessed the demise of a free and independent Austria with the invasion of the German Wehrmacht on 12 March 1938. On March 21, 1938, he was taken into protective custody by the Gestapo due to his opposition to National Socialism. He is released from custody on May 1, 1938. He returns to his apartment in Vienna's 13th district.
