In 1914, Adolf Brestan was drafted into the First World War. World War I was drafted. In 1916, he married Margaretha Josefine Kanka and returned from the war in 1918.

Colleagues, I tell you, before I go on duty with these Nazi criminals, I'd rather retire.
Immediately afterwards, he belustrates three National Socialists on the street who are already wearing the swastika armband and tears it off one of them.
Adolf Brestan is denounced and arrested by the Gestapo on March 17, 1938. He remained in custody until June 10, 1938 and was immediately suspended from duty. On December 31, 1938, he was officially dismissed through forced retirement.
During the entire period of German occupation, Adolf and Margaretha Brestan lived on a small forced pension until they were allowed to experience the liberation of Vienna in April 1945. He was rehabilitated on April 27, 1945, reinstated to duty and from then on managed the guardroom in Vienna-Währing.
