Sylvester Hofbauer attended the Stiftsgymnasium in Melk and graduated in 1922. He then began studying to become a teacher at the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Vienna and joined the Kürnberg student fraternity in 1922. After completing his doctorate, he became a secondary school teacher and head of the convict in Hollabrunn.
In view of your close ties to the system that has been overcome and your behavior towards the NSDAP, it appears impossible for you to remain in the service without significantly endangering the interests of the service, which is why you are temporarily suspended from the service in accordance with § 154 of the Teacher Service Regulations (RGBl. No. 319 ex 1917)

He then earned his living as an employee of a private company until he was drafted into the Wehrmacht on May 8, 1941.
On November 17, 1941, he was arrested again and charged with subversion of the armed forces, suspected subversive activities and refusing to salute Hitler. After the trial before the military court was quashed due to lack of evidence, he was released three weeks later.
As a Wehrmacht soldier, he witnessed the liberation of Austria on May 8, 1945 as a corporal in the 893rd Rifle Battalion.
After the war, he was appointed principal of the Bundesrealgymnasium in Amstetten from 1945-1968. He is involved in the ÖVP-Kameradschaft der politisch Verfolgten und Bekenner für Österreich. He retired as director and died in Amstetten, single and childless, at the age of 77.
