Curriculum Vitae
Leonhard Neumann was born as the son of Ferdinand Neumann, a civil servant working at the Radautz [Radauti/Bukowina] horse stud, and his wife Valerie (née Pohl). He first attended the elementary school in Radautz, but the stud farm had to be relocated in 1914 due to the outbreak of the First World War. Due to the stud's frequent relocation, Leonhard Neumann changed schools many times, finally graduating from the Akademisches Gymnasium in Graz in 1925. He then began studying to become a teacher in Graz. In 1926, he became a member of the Babenberg Graz student fraternity, became involved in the Christian-German Gymnastics Association [today: Sports Union] and, after completing his teacher training, became an AHS professor of mathematics and descriptive geometry in Graz.
In the afternoon, HJ boys stood outside our house and in the courtyard. I opened the front door to find out whether I was being guarded. An HJ boy immediately jumped up to me and told me to stay in the apartment until I was arrested. After a short time, an SS man appeared and took me to the police prison in Paulustorgasse.
When I was brought in, I was met by Prince-Bishop Dr. Ferdinand Pawlikosky, who had already been arrested by the National Socialists. I shared a cell with an arrested police officer.
He soon joined the Wehrmacht and became an officer. In 1944, he was first injured in Russia and then deployed to France, where he was taken prisoner of war.
After the war, he returned to teaching at the Pestalozzi High School in Graz, where he was appointed principal in 1951. He earned particular merit as the driving force behind the purchase of the Babenberg house.
