Anton Kankovsky attends the Elisabethgymnasium in Vienna 5, where he joins the secondary school fraternity Herulia Wien. After graduating in 1903, he studied law at the University of Vienna. He was accepted into the Norica student fraternity in 1903. After completing his studies and a year in court, he joined the management of the Staats-Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft in 1910. In 1913, he received his doctorate (Dr. iuris). Following the merger of the Northern Railway, North-Western Railway and State Railway Company, he was transferred to the joint directorate (North-Eastern Directorate) of the state railroads. In 1923 he was appointed to the General Directorate and in 1931 he was transferred to the office of the ÖBB Administrative Commission. In March 1933 he was appointed General Secretary of ÖBB and in June 1934 he was also appointed Head of the Personnel Department. On April 1, 1936, Anton Kankovsky was appointed Director of the ÖBB Accident Insurance Institution. From 1934 to 1938, he held a seat on the Vienna City Council.

After the Anschluss, he was removed from office on March 15, 1938 and was taken into police custody from April 28 to June 16, 1938 for his activities as Chairman of the ÖBB Disciplinary Chamber.1938, he is sent to Dachau concentration camp without trial, where he remains imprisoned - interrupted by a transfer of several months to Flossenbürg concentration camp - until February 11, 1941.
