After primary and secondary school, he completes an apprenticeship as a bricklayer. Between August 1914 and November 1918, he served in the k.u.k. Pioneer Battalion No. 8 in the First World War and disarmed as a private. He then worked as a bricklayer and foreman for various construction companies. In the interwar period, Julius Oswald joined the Austrian Heimatschutz and spoke out against National Socialism.
