Curriculum Vitae
After graduating from Matthias-Gymnasium, Josef Ebers enrolled in theology, philosophy and law at the Friedrich-Wilhelms University of Silesia in Breslau in 1900. In 1901, he became a member of the student fraternity Winfridia
After 1910, his academic career began and he subsequently became a university professor at various universities in German-speaking countries.
After the National Socialists came to power in 1933, he was allowed to work as a pro-rector despite his political "unreliability" as a member of the Center Party. However, he refused to salute the swastika flag and was deemed unacceptable at the University of Cologne in September 1935 and retired "due to the loss of his chair".
In 1936, he emigrated to Austria and was appointed to the University of Innsbruck. In the same year, he became a member of the Innsbruck student fraternity Austria. In 1937, he was dismissed from the German civil service.
After the invasion of German troops in March 1938, he was taken into protective custody for five weeks, granted leave a month later and then dismissed in May with a small pension and retired. House searches and constant reprisals accompanied him and his family until 1945.
