Curriculum Vitae
Friedrich Holomek was born in Vienna as the legitimate son of master tailor Johann Holomek and his wife Anna, née Weiß. After elementary school and lower school, he first completed an apprenticeship as a tailor, but then transferred to the regional secondary school in Stockerau in Lower Austria, where he graduated in 1910. In the same year, he enrolled in law at the University of Vienna.
With the outbreak of the First World War, Friedrich Holomek was drafted and subsequently served as a non-commissioned officer. His participation in the war forced him to interrupt his studies.
In 1918, Friedrich Holomek witnessed the defeat of Austria-Hungary, the collapse of the Dual Monarchy and the expulsion of the House of Habsburg. He resumed his studies and was awarded a doctorate in law in 1919. He then worked as a savings bank employee and rose to a managerial position there.
Friedrich Holomek became involved in the Christian Social Party (CSP) and became deputy district party leader of Vienna's 18th district, Vienna-Währing. In 1927 he becomes a district councillor. In 1934, he joined the Vaterländische Front and in the same year became a councillor for the City of Vienna [note: municipal councillor] as a representative of the 'Money and Credit Industry' profession. In 1937, Friedrich Holomek finally rose to become district leader of Vienna-Währing. As a political mandatary, he was opposed to National Socialism.
On March 12, 1938, Friedrich Holomek witnessed the demise of a free and independent Austria with the invasion of the German Wehrmacht. Two days after the occupation of Austria, he was arrested by the Gestapo on March 14, 1938 and released as a senior savings bank employee. He remained in custody until June 15, 1938. After his release, he worked as a tax consultant and was drafted into the Wehrmacht on October 9, 1944.
In April and May 1945, Friedrich Holomek witnessed the liberation of Austria and the re-establishment of the Republic. He joins the newly founded Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) and the ÖVP-Kameradschaft der politisch Verfolgten und Bekenner für Österreich. He is reinstated as an authorized signatory at the Sparkasse and is district manager of Vienna-Währing from 1945 until his retirement in 1954. He suffers a heart attack in 1949.
Friedrich Holomek dies unmarried and childless at the age of 71 in Vienna.
