Curriculum Vitae
Franz Wohlgemut is born in Gnas, the son of master binder Franz Wohlgemuth and his wife Caecilia, née Monschein. After completing his school education, he entered the seminary. On 15 November 1933, he joined the young student fraternity Rheno-Juvavia Salzburg. On July 17, 1938, Franz Wohlgemuth was ordained a priest.
At the festive reception in his home parish of Gnas in Styria, where he wanted to celebrate his first Mass, he responded to the greeting by saying that hard times would now come with persecution of priests. He is immediately taken into protective custody and brought to the district prison in Graz. He is charged with sedition. After his release, he was only able to celebrate his first mass on October 2, 1938. He then became a cooperator (chaplain) in Gamlitz, St. Georgen ob Murau, St. Andrä im Sausal and in Dobl. On November 16, 1942, he was finally appointed head of the Gaishorn parish.
Pushing back SS, a red-white-red flag fluttering from the high church tower sent them into a frenzied rage, chased a loose-fitting bullet after the local chaplain through the oak church door, which was quickly closed from the inside, missing its intended target by just a hair.
