Josef Kaltschmid attended the Franciscan grammar school in Hall/Tyrol and in 1902 joined the Sternkorona Hall, a secondary school fraternity that still existed in secret at the time. After graduating from high school, he studied theology and was ordained a priest in 1907. He began his pastoral work as a co-operator (chaplain) in Brandenberg/Tyrol; he also worked in Fieberbrunn and Kitzbühel. In 1925, he returned to Brandenberg as a priest.
