Josef Jaritz was a civil servant at the Post and Telegraph Directorate for Carinthia and a city councillor in Klagenfurt at the time of the takeover, as well as a functionary of the Patriotic Front and staff representative.

On March 13, 1938, he was arrested by the police in Klagenfurt, taken to the police prison and held there until March 26, 1938. After his release, he is dismissed from the civil service at the post office. His wife, who was also dismissed from the civil service, suffered the same fate. He had to fight on various fronts during the war. "It is a miracle for me to have survived this terrible time with only a few wounds," Jaritz later said.
