Born in the Rhineland, Peter Voigt was accepted into the student fraternity Vindelicia Innsbruck in 1932. He entered the Premonstratensian monastery in Wilten in 1933 and was given the religious name Gerlach at his solemn profession in 1937. He was also ordained a priest in 1937. After his ordination, he worked as a co-operator of the emergency church in Wilten-West until 1947. In 1939, he was imprisoned for writing a letter to a young man in Addis Abbeba and in 1940 for preaching.
