Franz Grössl comes from Vienna-Ottakring and, after graduating from high school, begins studying English and German language and literature at the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Vienna (Dr. phil. 1937), where he joins the Amelungia student fraternity in 1931. He worked as a journalist from an early age and, after completing his studies, became press officer for the VF's "Neues Leben" publication in 1937. After the Anschluss, he was banned from his profession and worked as an accountant. He was drafted into the German Wehrmacht in 1940 and returned from captivity in 1946.
