Karl (von) Kummer is a "first-degree half-breed", i.e. "half-Jew", according to the definition of the National Socialists' "Nuremberg Laws". He is baptized Catholic. After graduating from high school in 1935, he began studying at the Technical University in Vienna. In the fall of 1935, he joins the Marco-Danubia student fraternity. In 1939, he transferred to the University of World Trade in Vienna. His studies were interrupted when he was drafted into the German Wehrmacht, but he was able to complete them in 1941 with a degree in business administration.

In early April 1942, he moved to Unterreichenstein [Rejstejn] in Bohemia. He was arrested there on May 12, 1942 and transferred to the Buchenwald concentration camp
