Johann Evers was ordained a priest by Karl Joseph Cardinal Schulte in Cologne Cathedral in 1936. He takes up his first chaplaincy in Tolkemit (Tolkmicho) in the East Prussian district of Elbing. Two years later, he took up the same post in Elbing, St. Nikolai in East Prussian Warmia, where he also served as parish priest.

In 1940, he was arrested by the Gestapo because his views did not suit the National Socialists. After his release, he was expelled from Warmia. From 1940, Evers initially took on temporary work as a chaplain at the municipal hospitals in Düsseldorf.
