Curriculum Vitae

Johann Sahler initially studied law at the University of Vienna after graduating from the state grammar school in Brixen in 1899. He was admitted to the student fraternity Norica in 1901. After completing his doctorate in 1906, he worked as a trainee lawyer in Zywiec/Galicia (today in the border triangle of Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia). In 1912, he began studying theology at the seminary in Brixen/Bressanone and was prefect at the "Cassianeum" in Brixen/Bressanone from 1914 to 1915. After his ordination to the priesthood, he accompanied the Dombimer Standschützen on the Italian front as a field curate from 1915-1918.

Further stages of his priestly work: 1919-1924 St. Joseph's benefice in Bregenz, 1924-1928 benefice of "Unserer Lieben Frau am See" in Bregenz and 1928-1938 parish priest in Bludenz.

Because as a priest in Bludenz he had "asked parents and BdM girls [as well as the BdM leader] not to appear openly in front of the boys near the village in their gymnastics outfits [...]", the 17-year-old daughter of the district administrator reported him to the district leadership. After his house was searched, he was taken into protective custody in Bregenz from August 11, 1938 to November 10, 1938.

According to the findings of the state police, his conduct endangers the existence and security of the people and the state by misusing his office as a clergyman to disparagingly criticize and undermine the development work of the movement and the state in Gau Austria. In freedom, he represents a serious danger to those around him [...].
