After graduating from high school, Erik Werba studied at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts and at the University of Vienna, where he received his doctorate in 1940.
After the Anschluss, he wrote a letter of apology to the participants of his fraternity's Christmas pub, which ended up in the hands of the Gestapo. As a result, he was arrested in December 1938 for secret society and incitement and released in January 1939 following an intervention.
