Adolf Enge was born in Kratzau (Chrastava), district of Reichenberg (Liberec, Czech Republic). He first attended the Jesuit grammar school in Bohosudov and then in Teplice Sanov. After graduating from high school in 1904, he began studying law at the German Charles University in Prague and joined the Ferdinandea Prague student fraternity in 1904. In 1906, he moved to Graz and became a member of the Carolina student fraternity.
After graduating as Doctor iuris in Graz in 1911, Adolf Enge began his career as a lawyer. During the First World War, he worked in military jurisdiction, first in Graz and from 1917 in Ljubljana, before settling as a lawyer in Weiz/Styria in 1918.
He was also politically active. He subsequently held various political mandates in the Styrian provincial parliament and provincial government, including the presidency of the provincial parliament, and was also a functionary in the VF.
After the Anschluss, Adolf Enge was arrested on 12.3.1938 and imprisoned in the police prison in Graz until 22.3.1938.
