Wolfgang Zaunbauer - brother of Johannes, who also joined the Kürnberg student fraternity in 1928 - attended elementary school in Mödling and graduated from grammar school in Horn in 1930. He then studied at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Vienna, graduating in 1936. In 1930, he became a member of the Kürnberg student fraternity.

While training as a specialist in radiology at the Rudolfsstiftung hospital, he was taken into protective custody for three months as an assistant doctor in 1938. After his release, he worked as a radiologist until he was drafted into the Wehrmacht.
