Curriculum Vitae

Friedrich Hess (later Frederick W. Hess) is a senior at Starhemberg when it goes underground in 1938. While researching for the Aryan certificate, he discovers that his biological father, who died young and was a highly decorated officer in the First World War, was Jewish by birth.

Hess's stepfather, an illegal National Socialist as it turns out after the Anschluss, makes him and his mother an offer to declare Friedrich Hess the product of adultery and assume paternity. Hess rejects this, however, and manages to escape to the United States with the help of his brothers in the Bund.
