Curriculum Vitae

Viktor Hermann Carl Schumacher was born in Schwaz, the son of the local doctor Karl Schumacher and his wife Paula. He attends school in Schwaz, where he joins the Frundsberg holiday fraternity in August 1910. He then transferred - like his brother Karl Schumacher - to the Franciscan grammar school in Hall/Tyrol and became a member of the secondary school fraternity Sternkorona Hall.

After graduating from high school, he studied medicine in Innsbruck and joined the student fraternity Austria Innsbruck in 1913. In 1914, he enlisted as a one-year volunteer in the Kaiserjägern in Hall/Tyrol. As a lieutenant, he was taken prisoner in Italy on November 4, 1918, from which he was only released in February 1919. When he returned home, he continued his studies and graduated with a doctorate in medicine in 1922. He began his professional career at the hospital in Hall. He soon took over his father's practice as a town doctor in Hall/Tyrol. Viktor Hermann Carl Schumacher was also politically active: in 1929 he was elected to the municipal council of Hall/Tyrol and from 1936 to 1938 he was elected city councillor and deputy mayor.

After the Anschluss, he was removed from these offices and detained by the Gestapo for some time. After his release, he was able to resume his practice as a doctor, but was constantly under observation by the Gestapo. He joins the resistance group formed in Hall/Tyrol around Anton Haller. Shortly before the end of the war, Viktor Hermann Carl Schumacher was arrested again. However, he was able to escape from prison and go into hiding until the Allies invaded.
