In March 1939, Josef Koliander graduated from the Realschule Wien-Simmering (Gottschalkgasse) and then began studying at the Hochschule für Welthandel (Dkfm. 1942, Dr. rer. comm. 1944). In 1940 he joined the forbidden underground student connection Rhaeto-Danubia and is one of the brave 72 ÖCVern, which will be classified in secret between March 1938 and April 1945. It accedes to a forbidden Catholic connection at a time when the defeat of France is already established and therefore there is a high spirit in Germany.

Josef Koliander joins his studies with 1. July 1939 at the service of Landesbank AG, which financial institution he remains connected to his entire professional life and where he makes a considerable career leading him to Deputy Director General 1965 via Prokura 1950. He also began studying at the Faculty of Law and State Sciences of the University of Vienna (Dr. iur. 1951).
