Karl Ölz attended the "Stella Matutina" grammar school in Feldkirch and was called up for military service after graduating from high school in 1914. During the war, the young lieutenant enrolled at the University of Graz and joined the student fraternity Carolina Graz in 1915.
After the war, he completed his law studies in Innsbruck, where he obtained his doctorate in 1920. After training as a lawyer, he became a notary in Groß-Enzersdorf near Vienna in 1927.
After the annexation of Austria, he was arrested in 1938 and released after a few weeks for military service.
